6 weeks to a 10k

On Saturday, October 23rd is a 10k for a local organization called Home of the Innocents.

The event takes place at Bernheim Forest and I haven't been there since Middle School so it'll be nice to go back. I know the race is a road race, as opposed to trail, but I have no idea what the elevations are like. Early October it would be a good idea for me to go out there and run the course so it's not a surprise on race day.

I have less than six weeks until this race, so I've been browsing the web for a training plan. Hal Hidgon's website has training plans for lots of races and I've found one that is an 8 week Intermediate plan that I could jump into. If I start with Week 3, I'll have to run 20 miles this week, which is almost double my normal mileage which is NOT a good idea. Increasing your mileage by more than 10-15% per week only sets you up for disaster. I looked at the Novice plan which has me running a lot less than I am now!

What to do? Find a happy medium between the plans.

This is my plan for the week:

Monday: rest
Tuesday: 4 mile run
Wednesday: 35-40 minute tempo run
Thursday: Bikram
Friday: off
Saturday: run 4
Sunday: cross train/run 3

I would like to run 3-4 days a week, do at least one Bikram class, and have one day off. Once my elbow has healed, I'll add in some swimming as well!

Fortunately for me, two of my runs are with friends which will be a great motivator! It's amazing how much better runs can be when you have training partners.

  1. I did the Bernheim 5K last year. It was fun. I don't remember many (if any) hills. I am out of town that weekend, otherwise I'd love to do the 10K too.

  2. I am doing the 10k too! Sadly, I have NEVER been to Bernheim even though I've lived here my entire life (I'm so lame). It's exciting!!
