Forks Over Knives

Last night I went to go see the movie Forks Over Knives with Steph, et al. For you Louisville folks, the film was showing at Louisville's finest, Village 8.

The tagline of the movie is: WARNING: THIS MOVIE COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE!

Forks over Knives is a documentary/collection of studies that show how a plant based diet can radically change your health for the better. They say that despite all the medicine and technology we have, we are sicker than ever.

A quotation from the website:

"FORKS OVER KNIVES examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the so-called “diseases of affluence” that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting our present menu of animal-based and processed foods. The major storyline in the film traces the personal journeys of a pair of pioneering yet under-appreciated researchers, Dr. T. Colin Campbell and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn."

In the course of the movie we see the results of clinical trials of people who were suffering from high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, etc whose conditions were halted or reversed when switched to a plant based diet. Studies on mice showed that diets of animal protein "turned on" cancer. They pointed out that everyone thinks that we need to eat meat for protein - but meat isn't the only source of protein - and if you read this blog there's a high chance that you already know that.

Between segments they showed famous quotations, one being "Let food be thy medicine" by Hippocrates. They encouraged eating to live, not living to eat. Forks Over Knives teaches to treat your food as fuel and as medicine. Choose FORKS (managing your diet) over KNIVES (getting surgery) and you'll live a much happier life.

I found Forks Over Knives to be very inspirational to me. What is so tough is trying not to say anything to those around me and trying not to get in their face about what they're eating. People have no idea. We are so addicted to sugar and to pleasure foods it's disgusting. I will say this: we only do this once. If you want to eat a big bowl of ice cream every once in a while, no one should to be able to stop you. But at the same time: we only do this once. We only have this one life. If you can't eat well for yourself, do it for someone else! Do it for those who you care about and who care about you. There is no one else like you - you are irreplaceable.

  1. Thank you for writing this review! I am going to share it with friends. I haven't seen the film yet but I so agree with you, I'm vegan for those reasons and more. I hope many take away from this movie the same things you did.
